Music at St Paul 


As Martin Luther said, Music is indeed a precious, worthy and costly treasure given by God. 
We are thankful for this gift, striving for excellence in all that we sing, play or do, to the Glory of God and to share God's love and mercy with the world.
Notes on Sunday, September 8, 2019
Today's hymn of the day at our first and third worship services is "Take My Life, That I May Be" - set to the Calypso tune of TOMA MI VOLUNTAD at 8:30 and to PATMOS at 11:00. This text can be found in Evangelical Lutheran Worship No. 583 and 685 and dates back to 1874. The prelude at 11:00 is a Partita written by Deacon Kathleen Cartledge on the setting of Hymn No. 685:
Take my life that I may be, consecrated Lord to thee; take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my voice and let me sing always, only for my King; take my lips and let them be filled with messages from Thee.
At 9:45 the Response Song of the Day is Lead Me To the Cross - a deep reflection on how we respond to God's love in Christ. Composed by Brooke Ligertwood in 2006, it begins like this:
Savior I come, quiet my soul, remember... Redemption's hill, Where Your blood was spilled, for my ransom. Everything I once held dear, I count it all as lost. Lead me to the cross, Where Your love poured out. Breing me to my knees, Lord I lay me down. Rid me of myself, I belong to You, Lead me, lead me to the cross...
Both songs are a beautiful reflection on how our lives are changed by God's love - how we can let go of our old selves, rejoicing in how we go forward in God's amazing love and grace in new and meaningful ways.
The 8:30 and 11:00 Choirs will bring a lovely harmony edition of "Breathe" by Marie Barnette that reflects on God's Word being the very air we breathe:

More steps forward! Music increases inside our Worship Spaces!

 More steps forward! I know it seems like its taking forever, but we have been care-filled as we've stepped forward in music at St  Paul Lutheran Church during the pandemic. In June, the Choirs started singing indoors in small groups, masked. As we followed our church leadership's guidelines, at the end of June, we were able to sing unmasked for those who have been vaccinated.  Its now July, and we are praying for those who are still struggling with Covid-19 and beginning to plan more and more for Music in Worship.  A year - it's been a year!  A year on March 17th since our building closed - and rehearsals were cancelled.  A year since choirs have sung in our worship space. Yet - there is hope. Today, we had the Pacer String Quartet visit for 8:30 worship - and they breathed life into the worship, into the room, into our hearts with their music.  They gave of themselves and this little bit of hope grew a little more in my heart - as I realize, we are one step closer to have someone sing in worship. And then having a small group sing in worship - stepping our way back to hymns and choirs. Let's pray for each other, be patient and compassionate with each other - even when, especially when, we don't want to.  Everyone has had some sort of song stilled during the pandemic. And some of us have lost a little and some of us have lost a lot. And we are used to having all types of arts and mediums through which to express that. And Lent continues... We are so blessed to have musicians who love to serve in our community. We are blessed to have parish students who auditioned for Region Band and All State Band. Many of them made one of those groups (and also All State Orchestra). To them and their families, I say congratulations! Well done, good and faithful servant - for continuing to hone the gifts God has given you, to share not only with the ones you love, not only for a grade or at church, but to go out bravely among strangers and share those gifts with others - to be part of something larger than yourself - yes, that deserves a well done! For those students and anyone who did not make one of the bands or orchestras or choirs - in your preparation you stretched yourself, you grew and you reached for something.
