Lent at St Paul

Lent at St Paul

Lent - a time of contemplation, penitence and making time to consider the beauty of God's love for the world. What's not to like about Lent? Some of us struggle with these days before Easter. Maybe we want to get to the celebration - life can be difficult and we often walk in days of wilderness, so we yearn for the things that bring us joy!

The music of Lent is a beautiful thing - it speaks to the darkness, opening it up to let God's light shine in. The music speaks of the different feelings and sorrows of our souls and makes room for the joys that Easter brings.

In Lent, we will have Evening Prayer on Wednesday nights at 6:30 pm - with a Lenten Choir of volunteer singers helping us sing. There will be short Lenten Dramas as well, from Prayers of the Passion.

March 1st - Men for Him will sing at 8:30 and 11:00 worship - featuring Prayer of the Children written by Kurt Bestor. He wrote this piece in the late 20th century, frustrated by the horrendous civil war and ethnic cleansing happening in the former Yugoslavia. Serbians, Croations and Bosnians were divided, entire families were torn apart. Today, situations still exist where children are killed, oppressed and immersed in intolerable conditions that seem to be never ending. There are children in our own communities, across our land and our world who need our prayers. Men for Him offer this anthem as musical offering on March 1st. Just as Jesus went into the wilderness to be tempted and badgered by evil, so do children of our day walk in wilderness. Let us listen to this music as a call to prayer for all children, of all ages who are hurting, grieving and in pain. Let us pray for God's kingdom to come fully, for the Holy Spirit to breathe across the land - and as we express in the music of Lent - to repent and realize that our God is gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. May we learn to love from God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

March 4th - Evening Prayer at 6:30 with Lenten Choir

March 5th - St Paul Choir members accompany Pastor Jeff as he preaches at the Cooperative Ministers Fellowship Revival at 7 pm at Friendship Baptist Church, Downtown Aiken, Sc.
