Following Jesus - our Musical Journey
This week, we hear about the passion prediction and when Peter gets off track, Jesus sets him straight. How often do we get off track? Everyone does - and so this week the music chosen brings us to focus on Christ, and how we follow Christ, seek Christ, and acknowledge the ties that bless our lives through our relationship with Christ.
In 8:30 and 11:00 worship - our Handbell Quartet starts us off with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" and they add to our Holy Communion with settings of Tallis' Canon and the familiar hymn "Blest Be the Tie that Binds" which the congregation will also sing, along with the Hymn of the Day - "Will You Come and Follow Me". The Choir sings a simple but lovely favorite - "Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God" for this Labor Day Weekend. A gentle reminder of our seeking that happens in our relationship with the Divine in our every day living.
A 9:45 - we begin with a hymn of praise that reminds us of the journey to, through, and beyond the cross with Christ for our salvation - "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High" Justin Hadden is our leader this week at this service, and we are always blessed by his music and his offering of leadership in our contemporary service.
Our Celebration Organ Series begins this month! We begin to celebrate over the next year the 25th Anniversary of the Installation and Dedication of our Pipe Organ - Casavant Opus 3728. This 14 rank instrument is capable of so much more than other small instruments. This powerfully compact design fills the room - and is powered by a medium sized blower motor, and voiced to perform well in hymn and liturgy leadership, accompaniment for choirs and instruments, and to be used as a solo instrument. Capable of performing much of the repertoire from many of the Masters, this instrument will sing with joy throughout the year as we celebrate the inspirational gifts of music that it brings to our church and community life.
Our first concert is Sunday, September 24th at 3:30 pm. It will feature organ solos and organ and brass - ranging from a classical arrangement of a solo from the Messiah for Trumpet and Organ through other styles to culminate in brass and organ swinging spirituals. All are welcome - invite friends and neighbors and celebrate with us!
